Choosing a buffer

For routine calibrations, you get the best results by choosing two or three points around your sample's pH value, or to the limits of your expected measurements. Most instruments require you to choose buffers from the same manufacturer and series for correct temperature correction (ATC).

Precision and documentation

Many buffers are made with traceable certificates (e.g. DAkkS or NIST/DIN) to easily document your calibration in QA/QC environments. Tolerances and uncertainties are clearly stated on the label or certificate, making it easy to fulfil internal and external requirements.

Good practice

Keep the bottles closed tightly, let the buffer reach ambient temperature, and avoid cross contamination by never returning used buffer to the bottle. Alway pour a suitable amount into a clean container, or use buffer sachets for small, single-use amounts. Note the expiration date and change to a fresh batch for repeated calibration to ensure stable, traceable results.
